Why is the quality inspection of large cast steel parts difficult?
2024-08-14 13:44:27

The difficulty in quality inspection of large cast steel parts is the result of a combination of multiple factors. This not only requires steel casting manufacturers to have good testing equipment and technology, but also to equip high-quality testing teams to ensure that the quality of steel castings meets the requirements.

1. Size and weight, due to their large volume and weight, pose significant challenges for quality inspection. The large size and weight of castings require testing equipment with sufficient load-bearing capacity and coverage, which further increases the difficulty of testing. Therefore, many manufacturers will choose suitable non-destructive testing based on the castings.

During the casting process, defects such as pores, inclusions, and shrinkage cavities are prone to occur. These defects are often difficult to detect through surface inspection methods for large cast steel parts and require non-destructive testing (such as ultrasonic and X-ray) to identify and evaluate. During display operation, signal attenuation and depth resolution issues can lead to inaccurate detection results.

3. Many castings have complex geometric shapes and internal structures, which increase the functionality of the product but also increase the complexity of testing. The complexity of the structure makes it difficult for some standard inspection tools and methods to effectively cover the entire workpiece, leading to blind spots in inspection and potential defects that cannot be detected.

4. Casting stress and deformation are inevitably generated during the production process, which may lead to cracks and damage in subsequent processing and use. Therefore, the testing of large cast steel parts should evaluate their stress distribution and deformation, which further increases the technical difficulty of the testing.
